Video stuttering

Post by shrugg1e »

Hi guys,

after a few minutes of watching a video (SMB share from Synology NAS, all devices are connected with ethernet cable), it begans to stuttering, it looks like some frame drops.
The stuttering is for 1 minute.
If i pause and play again the video plays normally but after a few minutes the stuttering comes back.
Another workaround is to skip 10 seconds back or forward.

This problem causes on different videos.

I configured MrMC to sync framerate on video start/stop.

A few months ago i have absolutely no problems with MrMC but meanwhile i changed a lot of things in my home setup:
- Upgrade vom old Apple TV 4K to newer version, so i have to reinstall MrMC on this new device.
- Upgrade my Synology NAS from DSM 6 to DSM 7.

The uploaded debug log name is Q3QDE.log, the problem causes from 6:50 to 7:50.

I hope you can help me!

Thank you!

NFS isnt an option because the file share is encrypted, so i cant use NFS.

None of us can access the log-file but @amet and @davila. Hence, it is somewhat looking into a crystal ball.

I haven't heard nor did I experience in my own set-up any hiccups with NAS shares. I recently went through the process of exchanging all the hardware by myself, because I unfortunately had to. However, I was lucky to exchange it one by one. changing the whole set-up makes it much more difficult to trace down the issue and changing to NFS would be one of the easiest way to exclude some issues...

Having that said, you are a bit on your own and you need to approach the problem step by step. I personally assume it to be either a network problem or issue with your share.

Try to aceess the files on your SMB share with your PC utilizing VLC or similar. If they play without problems try to exchange LAN cables to your ATV. The issue persists? Thoroughly review SMB settings in respect of SMB version! I have absolutely no clue about Synology as I am using a QNAP, however, not using the appropriate SMB version on either device is the reason for most of the problems you are mentioning - it is not a particular MrMC problem but an error users are experiencing when streaming.

If I had to, I would bet on SMB version to be the problem.

Unlikely but not impossible could be your network. Such as devices using the same IP address or devices not being in the same subnet. Review the IP of your NAS and ATV so they are not having the same IP but in the same subnet. Is your network set up correctly? Same subnet throughout your whole network incl routers, switches etc.?

So where are the two admins?!

I dont think SMB/Network is the problem because the Infuse App doesnt have problems to play videos from the same share.

Sure, but this is no network problem because some other videos plays normally. A 4K HDR movie with a high bitrate plays without stuttering.

Man, trying to help you but you seem to know everything better.

If you sorted out network issues, there must be something about the files, the codec whatever what causes the problem. All of my files and there are plenty of highest rate 4k HDR DV incl Atmos sounds etc play totally fine here.

Anyway, I am out.

I think i found a solution:

I changed the Apple TV Display Settings from 4K DV 60Hz to 4K DV 50Hz.

Now i havent seen stuttering for many days.
