Moving from Infuse to MrMC: Missing a few things

Post by MofTot »

Hello

Apple TV 4

After a few years with Infuse I'm trying out MrMC because I was tired of Infuse's poor playback of 1080i content and also poor handling of content with changing audio channel configurations (eg during ad breaks), leading to garbled audio.

I'm primarily using Infuse/MrMC to play recorded TV in 1080i in either .ts (with embedded dvb_subtitle subtitles) or .mp4 (without embedded subtitles as the .mp4 container doesn't support this).

My first impression is that Infuse's GUI is superior to MrMC's but MrMC's playback is way superior to Infuse's. All the playback issues I've noticed with Infuse seem to be handled properly by MrMC. And I especially love the feature through which I can configure FF and RW steps, which makes it extremely easy to skip ad breaks.

However, I'm missing/having issues with the following features, is there anything I've missed?
  1. Touch remote during playback to see progress for a few seconds. This instead does a FF by 10 min. How do I configure this gesture? How do I view the progress without pausing playback?
  2. View/hide embedded dvb_subtitle. Which gesture(s) do I need to use in order to view/hide the embedded dvb_subtitle stream in the .ts file during playback? Does MrMC support dvb_subtitle?
  3. Navigating in MrMC using the remote seems very flaky. Often up/down or left/right gestures are misinterpreted and duplicated, which makes it difficult to navigate. Is this because you've overwritten the gesture handling in order to be able to control FF/RW during playback? Are there any settings I can apply to make simple navigation work as it should (ie as in all the other apps)?

Hi,

1. Just a light touch( no click) on a remote pad will bring up the playback progress

2. Swipe down will bring osd with subtitle control on top, you can disable subtitles there

3. Gestures need a bit of getting used to, you can also lower the speed in Apple TV settings. Default is medium speed, slow works better for me

Hello

Thanks for your prompt reply.
  1. Thanks to your reply I discovered that the touch not only has to be dead center but also ultra light, much lighter than in other ATV4 apps.
  2. Nothing happens when swiping down, no OSD is displayed. It doesn't matter whether the content is playing or paused. It doesn't matter whether the content has an embedded dvb_subtitle stream or 1 or more external subtitle files in .srt and/or .vtt format. Do you have any suggestions? "Enable parsing for closed captions" is enabled. The .srt and/or .vtt file has the same base name as the .mp4/.ts file and can potentially contain the short ISO language code, eg Title E01T10.ts has Title E01T10.1.en.srt and Title E01T10.2.en.srt subtitle files, 2 different versions. It doesn't matter whether there's only one subtile file with/without language, eg Title E01T10.srt, still no OSD is displayed.
  3. Thanks, it helps slightly to set it to Slow.
Thanks for you help.

Hi,

1. Only a touch without a click should not do anything else except bring the OSD up.

2. If you click the pad, video should pause and give you a thumb of the current position... while in that window you can swipe down to bring a top bar with settings.

I am not in front of it now, but it worked like that yesterday without any issues :)

You didn’t enable Siri expert mode? All above is based on default settings

Amet, remember that remote usage in PVR is different from all the other. It's basically siri expert mode in PVR.

just a touch will cause a skip. touch the top you skip 10 minutes forward, touch the bottom 10 minutes back, touch the edges it's what you have configured in settings

a click will bring up the OSD

I didn’t realise that he was talking about recorded content via PVR....

TS or not, if it’s played via added source we should see it as a regular video

I did indeed, I incorrectly was under the understanding that it was required in order for the customized FF/RW to work. Without this enabled it works a lot better, albeit still a bit fiddly with the navigation.

Moving on to the next issue: It seems that deinterlacing isn't always available for 1080i content, what is the requirement to the video file?

yeah, I just inferred it from the way things were described.

It would be good to know exactly what's being used.

Deinterlacing is done when ffmpeg is used as decoder. MrMC should detect if a file is interlaced and direct it to ffmpeg instead of the hardware decoders of tvOS (because they don't support interlaced content). If it's not doing so then you should submit a bug report.

Also, swipe down to pull down the OSD, go to settings, and then video. You can try forcing deinterlacing on instead of auto and you can change the deinterlacing type. For sports bob-inverse works best I think. For film based shows I like yadif2x.
