I'm using Kodi on the 4k firestick. No problems at all with HDR or SDR.

If I remember correctly I had to sideload Kodi onto the firestick but there is plenty of information on how to do that kicking around over at the Kodi hardware forum. Also, you should hardwire your firestick to your network as WiFi doesn't give the best speed for watching full-fat UHD material. Again full info over at the Kodi forums here https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=336151

Nice... I already have an Amazon TV 4k so I cna give this a shot. Looks like it still can't do Atmos lossless passthrough like Shield can but looks like it's better than Apple TV in every way - at least at first glance.

Well it can certainly do HDR shadow detail better that's for sure!

To be fair, the Apple is a superb device, just not for me due to its HDR issue. I don't think there is a 'perfect' streamer, they all have one flaw or another.

Boris Blank wrote: 26 May 2019, 13:31 Well, infuriatingly the missing detail has now jumped up to about everything below 5%. Presumably this is due to the latest firmware update for the Apple. Even more infuriating, Infuse works perfectly.
Yes, indeed. The range now is 100-924 (4.1% to 98.2%), It's a hard clipping and not a scaling error because the rest of the output is bit perfect. With infuse, the range is 64-924. It still clips above 924 (not much of an issue).

FireTV 4K stick also passes through superblack/white. It also passes all of the HDR10 metadata correctly.

Plex testflight for tvOS now has HDR support using its new video player.

I'm curious if it has the problems discussed in this thread.

Sorry Cosmoxi, no idea.

wesk05 - thanks for the confirmation. I'm aways amazed that hardly anyone notices the clipping, to me its blatantly obvious (certainly at the just above black level, especially with all the missing shadow detail :o ).

I use an HDMI cable to connect Mac to 4K HDR TV, experiencing the same issue. How do you solve this problem?

One thing I noticed being a Sony owner myself, (Oled) is that I had to go into the sets Picture/Advanced settings, and change video level setting from Auto to Full Range, as for whatever reason, I find that my TV does not always detect video levels correctly, and keeps ending up in 16-235 instead of 0-255. You might also need to go into MrMC video/acceleration settings, and select disable limited to full rescaling.

However, on my own set and AppleTV4k, I can almost make those patterns look right, but all other content is affected. I have just accepted the fact that it is an 'Apple' thing, and not much that can be done about it, until Apple sort it out. Pretty sure MRMC is not the problem.

I have the similar issue on the Shield device at the moment (new user to that platform), but that is concerning SDR white clipping levels, so am hoping for some Davilla magic there.
Whats the reason u want full range in the first place?
Im under the understanding basically all content is made in ycbcr limited?
I recently started trying MrMc alongside Infuse, and even though i like Infuse interface better - videos play smoother on mrmc.

Anyway im experimenting myself with this setting u speak of, "disable limited to full rescaling" - and theres another setting under system i believe, where u can enable/disable limited mode.

I dont know what those settings do though, does the tvos settings override mrmc ones?

When using AVFoundation codec, tvOS is in control of how output rendering happens.
When using VideoToolBox codec, video is rendered to a GLES layer according to full/limited BUT tvOS still controls how that is rendered for output.
