What is preventing MrMC finding my server?

Post by DanielCoffey »

Issue : When using a BT HomeHub 6A, MrMC cannot find the Plex server even when signed into Plex.
Client : MrMC 3.7.1 on Apple TV 4Gen
Host : Plex Media Server on unRAID NAS

This issue only occurs when I am required to use my BT HH6 as my router. When I use my own Zyxel/ASUS RT-AC86U there is no issue. I expect it is simply a case of "mother knows best" and there is probably some setting in the BT HH6 which is set too secure to allow MrMC to find the server.

Steps to reproduce...

1. Shut down all equipment and power off
2. Remove own modem/router and replace with BT HH6 combined device.
3. Power on all equipment and confirm internet access is working.
4. Bring up NAS box, start server and confirm Plex Docker is working
5. Start MrMC and Sign In to Plex. Exchange the Plex link code.
6. Go to Media Sources in MrMC. No media from the Plex server will appear.

When I turn on Debug and the Web Server, I think the relevant part of the log file is here...

Code: Select all

13:42:51.816 T:6176141312   DEBUG: CurlFile::Open(0x170206380) https://172-17-0-1.b624ef49d9cc4157a3cda699bcb4c2db.plex.direct:32400/identity

13:42:54.822 T:6176141312   DEBUG: CurlFile::Open(0x170206380) https://192-168-1-202.b624ef49d9cc4157a3cda699bcb4c2db.plex.direct:32400/identity

13:43:24.830 T:6176141312   ERROR: CCurlFile::FillBuffer - Failed: Couldn't resolve host name(6)
If I now shut down and revert back to my own Zyxel/ASUS equipment, MrMC picks up the Plex folders within a couple of seconds. This is why I suspect there is some setting in the BT HH6 that, by default, is preventing the handshake.

Now I am only curious as to what is going on here but it would be nice to know. There are only a few occasions that BT require me to use their hub but yesterday it inconvenienced us because I was forced to use the HH6 for a day.

Just in case I am barking up the wrong tree, I have attached the full debug log.

Doesn't sound like a MrMC issue but more a Apple TV/DNS issue.
Do you have custom DNS server settings at the Apple TV network level?

If all your network settings are "Automatic", maybe try rebooting the Apple TV whenever you swap network hardware.

DNS rebind protection needs to be off,it’s in the router but not all routers have this option adjustable

I would have thought powering off all equipment then bringing it up again one piece at a time would have resolved DNS issues. Ah well. At least it works perfectly when I use my own equipment. Thanks for thinking about it.

WAN connections using MrMC also not working for me. LAN works fine. Tested Kodi with Embycon on the same external device, so I know that the server isn't the problem.
MrMC reports I'm signed in, but no media is displayed.
