MRMC or infuse for best PQ 1080p->4k (or stick with rpi3)

Post by aaaMMMaaa »

Hello I have just jumped from rpi3+, to atv4k.
To also have additional apps support, and not only kodi in Linux.

Whereas the rpi (osmc) has absolutely perfect playback of 1080p Blu ray content on my 4k tv(100% working auto framerate and auto resolution) I now understand this might not be the case with atv4k?

So I have two options on atv4k, to emulate kodi experience
-Buy infuse pro
-Buy MrMC

So is there any difference in PQ between the two in upscaling 1080->4k? (atv4k does NOT support auto resolution, and I am not planning on keep changing the settings in atv between 4k and 1080p)

Most content I have stored on NAS are 1080p.
-which one performs best of the two SW?
-I have read that infuse provide better PQ in upscaling, Can anyone confirm?
Are the two SW using built in tvos upscaling(then there should be no difference), or using maybe bilinear(mrmc) and lanczos(infuse) scaling algorithm?

-should I just stick with rpi3 for 1080p playback and let the TV do the Upscaling(Samsung ue55ju6075) , or can the atv4k replace it in terms of PQ?

Thank you

Why don't you try MrMC (light) and judge by yourself?

I would like to know the inner workings of mrmc vs infuse on the atv4k, and their Upscaling algorithms.

And I would like to avoid placebo effects, by prejudgement, by having a preference for one app over the other. This can have an effect, which is not scientifically based.

Therefore a scientific approach, by having the answer from the coders is the best approach, in choosing the media player with best PQ.

Lastly, doing a test yourselv on video material is not a straightforward task, as you would like to compare the exact same frames, on 3 different players. (mrmc, rpi, infuse).

See https://github.com/MrMC/mrmc , everything is exposed there unlike Infuse which is closed source.

And we have no reason to recommend Infuse nor any other player. This is a MrMC forum, not a general a/v player forum.

Hi Davila, thank you for the reply.
It was a poor choosing of words, as I am not capable to understand the github code, but was speaking in general terms, and should be seen in context with my initial post.

- How is the upscaling done(fx1080p source) , and handled by mrmc?
1)tvOS is fed the source video and upscale?
2) mrmc up scales by fx bilenear algorithm?
If this is the case, will there be a "better" algortim anytime soon? Something similar like nvidia shield also got an upgrade in upscaling algortim? Believe it was lanczos3 algortim, or Sinc algorithm.

I am really looking for the best PQ, and are therefore indifferent to the player.

I have also been bought mrmc full version, to support development further.
