Transcoding subtitles (burn-in) when it shouldn't.

Hi there,

Been a long-time user of MrMC. And a happy one too.. The interface is some much cleaner than the native Plex App on the ATV..

However, my parents just upgraded from a ATV3 (which used PlexConnect) to a ATV4k. I installed MrMC immediately but now we run into a problem with subtitles (we are Dutch so about 90% of my content is subbed);

At home I never transcode, the MKV + SRT is just thrown to MrMC and it works great.

But my parents will transcode (4mbit) as my upload isn't that great and the media is in my house.

What happens is;
Plex will burn-in the SRT and seperate from that MrMC will also "overlay" the SRT (direct-play).. So we get double subtitles, the burnt-in ones a littles smaller then the direct-played ones...

The burnt-in ones should not be there, preferably. There's no way to alter the size, for one thing. And you can't select a different .srt of track.

There's a way for me to fix it; disable subtitles in MrMC.. Then only the burnt-in ones show.. But that's not really the way to go, as there's no way to alter the size, do some time shifting etc and all the other cool stuff MrMC can do with subs..

The native plex app doesn't do this, it just transcodes the video and audio but direct-plays the SRT...

For now, I'm stuck with the plex app, because that handles transcoding the way I want.. But the interface is just awful... And the subs in MrMC (if direct-played) also look better (IMO).

Is there something which can be done about this? I've been able to reproduce it back home on my own lan and ATV: set MrMC to transcode @ 4mbit and force transcode of local files; Got the double subs too...

Thanks!

I don’t think we have control over that but I will have a look in plex api (non existent) documentation :)

One thing to try, in plex server ->settings -> languages... what is your subtitles selection? Set it to manual and see if that helps

That doesn't help...

Just found out the app on the iPad does the exact same thing, see examples:

Just pressed the solved button by mistake! Please undo, not solved yet ;)

It would do the same as it’s the same code , I’ll see if I can reproduce on my side.

Looking on plex forums, seems that it might have to do with settings in Plex Web—Player , try playing with that setting to see if anything changes.

I have to correct myself:

If I set the subtitle setting for that user (my dad) to Manually Selected instead of Always Enabled it works!

But as we are Dutch and 90% of our content is subbed this is not really a solution, because they also use different apps on which they would have to select the sub every time :(

It would be great if we could make it work somehow..

If plex api allows us to specifically disable subs than it’s doable, I’ll check in the next few days and let you know.

We don’t ask for subs to be included/burned in, it’s a matter of finding an option to disable it.

BTW, I'm fine with transcoded subs and turning off subs in MRMC.. But I would like to alter the size then :)

Maybe that's the way to go? ...
