4K HDR

Hey all, I've finally got some high quality 4K HDR content which is predominately HDR10 for my LG C8, however from my research it seems the ATV can only playback HDR in Dolby Vision in a single stream.

So I thought I'd give Plex a go before trying to convert the files because the colours were all weird in MrMC and to my surprise they seem to work perfectly, the stream was Direct so I don't think it was transcoding at all..

My ATV seems to always show Dolby Vision on the LG C8 TV so I don't know if the content is actually in HDR.. but it certainly looks like it. Is there a way to check?

I'm going to try Aquaman which is apparently in Dolby Vision to see if that works in MrMC, but I'd much prefer using MrMC for all my content rather than using plex for 4kHDR

Am I missing something here?

Yes your missing something. I'm guessing that you have the output of your ATV4K set to Dolby Vision and not set to SDR. You also want to set it to match refresh rate and match color space so if you're playing something in HDR it will automatically switch from SDR to HDR.

Very interesting Thread.

I have the following Setup:

Sony KD55XD8505 (4K HDR - no Dolby Vision)
Yamaha RX-V 681 (4K Passthrough)
Apple TV 4K

Now I have set the Apple TV to 4K HDR 60FPS and I also set "match refresh rate" and "match color space".

So should I change from 4K HDR to 4K SDR?

Johannes

You get better color accuracy in apps by setting it to SDR. The screensavers are DV or SDR and don't come in an HDR10 version, so that would be getting converted to HDR10 if you don't have a TV that supports DV. Just running the ATV4K in SDR and letting it switch to HDR/DV for supporting videos is what most people do.

You are correct, I currently have it set to Dolby Vision. So by setting it to SDR.. the TV should pop up with "HDR" when HDR content is played? That would be handy because at the moment is displays Dolby Vision whenever anything is played even when I know the content should be HDR. Thanks for the TIP!, I'll report back once I've tried this.

Is there a guide on how to to set up the ATV somewhere? I must have missed it, I'll probably stop be from asking stupid questions :)

MrMC needs more tweaking than the Apple TV, there's not much to it  . In the Settings app, go to Video and Audio and set Format to 4K SDR, then in Match Content set Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate to On.
