TS or not, if it’s played via added source we should see it as a regular video
yeah, I just inferred it from the way things were described.

It would be good to know exactly what's being used.
It's content recorded from Freeview in the UK using my own recording engine - wget against HDHomeRun DVB-T2 tuners, capturing the broadcast in .ts. wget for the HDHR stream is more reliable than ffmpeg as ffmpeg sometimes stops prematurely owing to what it incorrectly believes is a corrupt dvb_subtitle stream.

I did indeed, I incorrectly was under the understanding that it was required in order for the customized FF/RW to work. Without this enabled it works a lot better, albeit still a bit fiddly with the navigation.

Moving on to the next issue: It seems that deinterlacing isn't always available for 1080i content, what is the requirement to the video file?
Deinterlacing is done when ffmpeg is used as decoder. MrMC should detect if a file is interlaced and direct it to ffmpeg instead of the hardware decoders of tvOS (because they don't support interlaced content). If it's not doing so then you should submit a bug report.

Also, swipe down to pull down the OSD, go to settings, and then video. You can try forcing deinterlacing on instead of auto and you can change the deinterlacing type. For sports bob-inverse works best I think. For film based shows I like yadif2x.
Sorry for not being clear: By "deinterlacing isn't always available for 1080i content" I mean that the "Deinterlace video" setting in OSD | Video is disabled ("Off") for some 1080i content, you can't enable it (it's grayed out), so you can't force it to do any deinterlacing. I can't seem to find any correlation between when it's disabled and when it's not.

I agree with your findings about "Bob - Inverted" for sport (I need it for F1), haven't tried "Yadif 2X" with movies, my Apple TV 4 can't cope with F1 using this method, simply can't keep up, video lags behind and eventually stops. Perhaps that works better with the more powerful Apple TV 4K.

Ah, sorry. I thought you had an ATV4k. It can do yadif2x on 1080i.

Davilla will need to work with you I think. I have no idea why the deinterlace option would gray out. Either it's there or if using hardware decoders it doesn't exist.

We would need a debuglog for the start. if you could provide a sample of a video that doesn’t trigger deinterlace please let us know

@davilla, anything else?

debuglog will show all :) , if deinterlace is grayed, the media is not interlaced :) That was done on purpose to keep fiddlers' from turning on the deinterlacer with progressive content.

Also, a tripple tap will toggle subs on or off.

before I wrote what I did above I checked progressive (720p) mpeg2 and it was *not* grayed out. :)

That makes sense, but sadly, it's incorrect. It fails to identify some 1080i content, I can upload a 1 min. 1080i snip that isn't identified as interlaced (where to?). I've uploaded debug log TX64G.log collected whilst playing this content (with Deinterlace grayed out). Watching this content in VLC, pausing it, setting Deinterlace to On (playback still paused) you can clearly see that the horizontal interlace lines are removed.

Just out of curiosity, which ffmpeg command (or anything else) do you run in order to determine whether the content is interlaced or progressive?

Thanks, I've uploaded F1 AZB GP Snip 1b.ts (92.0MB, 1 min).

Can I invoke av_probe_input_buffer from an ffmpeg command line?
