SMB - Browse for Network Server - Finds one; times out for another

Post by SoonerLater »

I had to do a hard reset on my AppleTV 4k yesterday (for reasons that had nothing to do with MrMC). Now I'm reinstalling all my apps on the ATV.

After I reinstalled MrMC I set about the task of re-adding the media sources. I have all of my movies on smb://louise/video and all tv episodes on smb://jessie/video. When adding Louise, I only had to browse to it. Adding the source was super quick. However, when I try to add Jessie by browsing to it, MrMC sees Jessie, but no shares (apparently). After a second or two, it just tells me "Error - operation has timed out." When I try to add Jessie manually, it also fails.

Of course, MrMC worked 100% with both servers before I had to reset my AppleTV. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. FWIW, both servers are running FreeNAS and are (as near as I can tell) have their samba shares configured exactly the same way.

Any suggestions for troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated.

>>> which SMB client?

When I successfully connected MrMC to smb://louise (1) libdsm was not enabled; (2) libsmb2 was not enabled. If I enable either or both of those SMB clients, then MrMC will no longer connect successfully to smb://louise. If I leave them both disabled, then smb://louise connects just fine.

MrMC will not connect to smb://jessie regardless of whether one, both or none of these smb clients are selected. I can select "browse for new share" then "windows network (SMB)" and it sees my local workgroup. I then select the local workgroup and it shows me the computers in the workgroup who have available shares, including jessie. When I select jessie, it hamster-wheels for a second or two, then gives the message "Error - operation timed out."

smb://louise is running FreeNAS 9.10.

smb://jessie is running FreeNAS 11.2.

if both are enabled, libdsm is used. try with only libsmb2 enabled.

>>> try with only libsmb2 enabled.

I tried that. If I have only libsmb2 enabled, then MrMC won't connect to smb://louise. However, if I disable both libdsm and libsmb2, then I can connect to smb://louise.

No matter what, I cannot browse/connect to smb://jessie Media Sources, Video, Add Videos, Add Video Source - Browse, Windows Network (SMB), (I see my local Workgroup), (I see Jessie and click on her), wait... Error - Operation Timed Out.

I assume that this can't be about credentials to connect to Jessie, since I am not even asked for credentials.

Nothing on louise or jessie has been changed in months. Before I had to do a hard reset yesterday on my AppleTV 4k, MrMC I had been connected both louise and jessie. If I need to change Samba settings on Jessie, I can do that.

with libsmb2, you must supply the user/pass. browse will not work unless you have zeroconf running on your servers.
